How do you punctuate with parentheses? If a sentence needs a comma, the comma will be placed after the parentheses. If the information in the parentheses is a complete sentence, the punctuation (period, question mark, or exclamation mark) will be placed inside the parentheses.
An exclamation point is used after a word group or sentence in order to emphasize a point or to express strong emotion or surprise. Use of the exclamation point is optional for the writer. It is one of the few ways that a writer can indicate how words may sound when spoken.
Similar to a question mark, when a quote has an exclamation mark, the quotation marks should go after the exclamation point. If the sentence does have an exclamation point, but the quote does not, then the exclamation point goes outside of the quotation marks. Examples: Yes, I will marry you!
Upside-down exclamation mark on a PC: Alt + 0161.
Parentheses (always used in pairs) allow a writer to provide additional information. The parenthetical material might be a single word, a fragment, or multiple complete sentences. Whatever the material inside the parentheses, it must not be grammatically integral to the surrounding sentence.
An exclamation mark, usually in parentheses (italicized in square brackets in quoted material), is sometimes used to indicate incredulity on the part of the writer. As with the analogous use of the question mark, this is a technique easily overdone: Mr. Jones asserted that never in his long and distinguished (!)
To escape ! (exclamation mark), use a single quotation mark around the password or use the back slash (\) as the escape character.
