Common Gateway Interface CGI is an old standard for web servers to dynamically respond to client web requests. Each request invokes an external, stand-alone program to generate a response for the incoming client HTTP request. Requests parameters are passed to the CGI program via environment variables.
CGI applications can be written in any computer programming language that is supported by the host computer, including compiled languages such as C and FORTRAN and scripting languages such as Perl and TCL.
There are three ways to execute CGI programs: Specify a directory containing CGI programs in the ScriptAlias directive. Specify the cgi-script handler in the file extension by using the AddHandler directive. Specify the cgi-script handler in the SetHandler directive.
CGI stands for Common Gateway Interface and provides an interface between the HTTP server and programs generating web content. These programs are better known as CGI scripts. They are written in a scripting language. The Network Component provides such a scripting language.
Historically CGI programs were often written using the C programming language. RFC 3875 "The Common Gateway Interface (CGI)" partially defines CGI using C, in saying that environment variables "are accessed by the C library routine getenv() or variable environ".
Create the CGI script. Ensure that the script is executable and has appropriate file permissions. Then, save it on the server in WEBGUI_HOME /etc/cgi-bin. Save the CGI script on the Web GUI server in WEBGUI_HOME /etc/cgi-bin .

The Common Gateway Interface (CGI) standard is a data-passing specification used when a Web server must send or receive data from an application such as a database. A CGI script passes the request from the Web server to a database, gets the output and returns it to the Web client.
If the user agent requests the name of an entry, the Web server executes the CGI program. The CGI program retrieves the source of that entry's page (if one exists), transforms it into HTML, and prints the result. The Web server receives the output from the CGI program and transmits it to the user agent.
CGI stands for Common Gateway Interface in Python which is a set of standards that explains how information or data is exchanged between the web server and a routine script.
