How to Paste Text in Vi Editor? Pasting text in Vi is straightforward. After copying or cutting text, move the cursor to the desired location where you want to paste the text, then press p. This will paste the text after the cursor.
PC: Ctrl + c for Copy, Ctrl + x for Cut, and Ctrl + v for Paste.
To place the yanked line in a new line above the cursor, type P . The yy command works well with a count: to yank 11 lines, for example, just type 11yy . Eleven lines, counting down from the cursor, will be yanked, and vi indicates this with a message at the bottom of the screen: 11 lines yanked .
We can use the +p and + in normal and command mode, respectively. However, it might be more convenient if we use the hotkey since it does the same thing as +p. Similarly, will yank the text into the + register to be available for pasting outside of Vim.
Heres how to copy text in Vim/Vi editor: Move the cursor to the beginning of the text you want to copy. Press the v key to enter visual mode. Use the arrow keys to select the text you want to copy. Once the text is selected, press the y key to copy the text.
Pasting text in Vi is straightforward. After copying or cutting text, move the cursor to the desired location where you want to paste the text, then press p. This will paste the text after the cursor.
In command mode: Go to the first line you want to copy. Press V - as in captial v / shift-v. Use vims navigation/motion keys to move the cursor to the last line you want to copy. Yank the text using y , or if youre planning to do a cut/paste use d to delete the text (which by default stores it in the copy/paste buffer)
Copying (Yanking) yy: Copy the current line in vi. 3yy: To yank multiple lines in vim, type in the number of lines followed by yy. y$: Copy everything from the cursor to the end of the line. y^: Copy everything from the start of the line to the cursor. yiw: Copy the current word.
