HITRUST Requirements for Passwords HITRUST password length requirements and strength requirements include a minimum of eight characters for a given password or 15 characters for accounts with the most privileged access.
Medical Records and PHI should be stored out of sight of unauthorized individuals, and should be locked in a cabinet, room or building when not supervised or in use. Provide physical access control for offices/labs/classrooms through the following: Locked file cabinets, desks, closets or offices.
Minimum Password Length should be at least eight characters or more. Longer passwords are generally more secure and harder to crack than short ones. For even greater security, you could set the minimum password length to 14 characters.
The current guidance is that passwords should only be changed when there is evidence of compromise.
A HIPAA password policy should be based on the latest recommendations from NIST. NIST guidelines recommend using a minimum of 8 characters to make passwords less susceptible to brute force attacks, and to use a complex and random combination of characters and numbers, including special characters such as symbols.

HIPAA does not detail specific password requirements for creating safe passwords, so these too should follow cybersecurity best practices.
