i hate to tell you this but youre probably doing passwords wrong at least thats what the national institute of standards says in the document they produced a few years ago with password guidance that basically says what weve been doing as an organization with password strength policies is making security worse not better so the old rules lets take a look at those it was that there was a formula that you needed to follow mixture of upper and lower case characters numbers special characters things like that and what that does in combination with an expiration date is make it so that users end up with passwords they cant remember and if they cant remember them then they have to write them down and if we make them change them a lot then theyve really got to write them down so instead of the old rules of a formula and expiration in fact the new guidance is that we should look at at length length is strength when it comes to passwords the longer your password the harder its going to

In fact, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) states, Password length has been found to be a primary factor in characterizing password strength. To strengthen the security of your online information, ensure your passwords are a random mix of at least 14 to 16 characters.
Its not the complexity of a password that makes it hard to crack; its the length of the password. The more characters in a password, the longer it will take for a super computer to run through all the possible combinations of characters. We recommend a 24-character or more password.
The key aspects of a strong password are length (the longer the better); a mix of letters (upper and lower case), numbers, and symbols, no ties to your personal information, and no dictionary words.
Long passwords are stronger, so make your password at least 12 characters long. These tips can help you create longer passwords that are easier to remember. Try to use: A lyric from a song or poem.
Theres no one password that is the most secure, and if there was, to write it here would make it insecure, as thousands of people would use it on their accounts. Rather, secure passwords contain a seemingly random combination of numbers, letters and symbols and include at least 16 to 20 characters.
A strong password is: At least 12 characters long but 14 or more is better. A combination of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Not a word that can be found in a dictionary or the name of a person, character, product, or organization.
Unless strong Multifactor Authentication (MFA) is universally in use by the organization, we recommend that user passwords should be a minimum of 16 characters in length. Privileged accounts (administrators and service accounts) should be 25 characters or greater whenever possible.
Passwords should contain three of the four character types: Uppercase letters: A-Z. Lowercase letters: a-z. Numbers: 0-9. Symbols: ~`! @#$%^*()-+={[}]|\:;.?/
