Cover Weights Cover weight paper refers to paper thats thicker and sturdier than text weight paper. At its heaviest, cover stock weight can be similar to the material used to make cereal boxes. Sometimes referred to as cardstock, bristol, index or tag paper, cover stock paper weights can be both coated or uncoated.
Text stock is a higher grade of paper used in projects requiring a better quality paper. Its a bit thicker than your standard bond copy paper. Text paper is often used for brochures and flyers, some magazines, and thin posters. Text paper weights range from 60# to 100#.
Most printer paper is sold in reams, which is a pack of 500 sheets. Small offices or home users may buy a single ream, whereas businesses can purchase cases full of many reams.
An 80 lb. cover sheet is quite different from an 80 lb. text sheet. In fact, a sample 80 pound text from our shelves has a GSM of 118 and a caliper of 5.1, while a matching 80 pound cover stock from the same company has a GSM of 216 and a caliper of 9.6.
The primary difference between cover stock and page stock is the weight. Weight is equated with thickness. Text paper is easier to fold, while the cover paper is more rigid and must be scored before you can fold it properly.
The terms cover stock and card stock are analogous and are frequently interchanged by both novices and industry professionals alike. They both refer to heavy weight paper, and for all intents and purposes, are the same thing card stock, is cover stock, is thick or heavy paper plain and simple.
Text paper (50, 60, 70, 80, and 100 pounds): : This type of paper is usually an upgrade in quality over book paper and is most commonly used in commercial printing operations.
Cover VS Text A cover weight paper is going to be thick, similar in feel to cardstock. Text weight papers are thinner, more similar to catalog and magazine paper. A paper labeled cover is always going to be thicker than a text paper. For example, 100# Gloss Cover is going to be much thicker than 100# Gloss Text.
Text is a generic name for a variety of lighter, thinner paper stocks that includes Book, Bond, Writing, Ledger, Offset paper. Text paper is flexible, can be easily rolled and folded and is used for printing flyers, handouts, letterheads, book pages, etc. The paper used in ink jet printers would be considered Text.
If you refer to text weight means you want an uncoated stock in the lighter weight. Cover Weight Sheets are thicker, sturdier sheets, commonly referred to as card stock.
