Photo Albums and scrapbooks should ideally be wrapped in Acid Free Packing Paper before being placed in a moving carton. Given the weight of these items, use the smallest box possible. If they can fit into a book carton (1.5 cubic feet), that is great. If not, use a medium sized moving carton (3.0 cubic feet).
Pack Securely Fill the bottom of the box with extra packing paper to cushion the inside. Gently slide the object into the box and pack enough paper around it so it doesnt move. Mark the glass side of the box with special tape or a sharpie. Tape the box shut all around. Reinforce corners with extra packing tape.

To prevent contamination and exposure, place all your photos and unframed art in archival-quality, acid-free packing or storage materials such as acid-free clear plastic bags and acid-free tissue paper.
Archival boxes These are the best option for your albums and scrapbooks (and photos!) for long-term preservation. If you have no intentions of future digitization, keep them safe longer in an archival box, but make sure its worthy of your belongings.
Put your albums in spine-down and pack them tightly. Anything with a cover made of fabric, leather, or loosely bound with string should be wrapped in linen or acid-free paper and placed flat. Dont let oversized albums bend over anything. If youre going to stack them, make sure the biggest ones are on the bottom.
Before moving, photos should ideally be organized and placed in photo albums. In order to best preserve your pictures and give you the ability to move them in and out of your photo albums safely in the future, we recommend using albums that contain plastic sleeves and pockets.
You may be tempted to use a clear plastic box thats advertised as being acid-free. But Smithsonian Institution Archives conservator William Bennett advises against this because we dont yet know how plastic interacts with photographs over the course of a century. Its safer to use time-tested paper boxes.
Horizontal storage of photographs is usually preferable to vertical storage, since it provides overall support and avoids mechanical damage such as bending or slumping. The photographs should be stored flat in drop-front boxes of archival quality housed on shelves or in metal cabinets.
Use an archival-quality box or album Whether you prefer to stack photos in a box or arrange them in an album, its best to look for a storage option thats free of acid and lignin (an acidic compound that gives trees their rigidity). Its also good to avoid dyes and recycled materials.
