You can apply a numbering scheme to the headings in your document by using multilevel-list templates and built-in heading styles in Word (Heading 1, Heading 2, and so on). Important: Make sure youre using built-in heading styles in your document.
To enable multilevel numbering, right click the Heading 1 button in the style panel and select Modify. Toward the bottom of the window, check Automatically update, then select Numbering from the format drop down. Click on the List Styles tab, select the 1/1.1/1.1.
Go to File Options Proofing. Select AutoCorrect Options, and then select the AutoFormat As You Type tab. Select or clear Automatic bulleted lists or Automatic numbered lists.
Outline Numbering Choose the Bullets and Numbering option from the Format menu. Click on the Outline Numbered tab. Click on the numbering style you want to use. If you are satisfied with the numbering style, proceed to Step 10. Click on the Customize button.
