For the longest time I didnt like writing business plans. Heres why. Because every time it came time to write a business plan, it was almost as if my school teacher from Jr. high school would say, Patrick, go do your homework. Write up a business plan. And Im sitting here saying, wait a minute. First of all, I dont know how to write a business plan. Secondly, I dont think it works. I dont think its effective. I dont think this things going to work. Until I realized how to write up a business plan that worked for me and from there on, I could not wait to write up my business plan for the following year. So today, were going to talk about two different types of business plans. One, which is dissecting and spending six, seven, eight hours getting every single detail of your business plan in place, that you read once a month. Then from there, gathering all the information and taking all the simple things, the clear things that you need and creating a one-page business plan. An

How long should a business plan be? There is no right or wrong answer to this question a business plan can be anywhere from 10 to 100 pages long (although we recommend keeping it shorter so your audience doesnt lose interest). It mostly depends on the purpose of the plan, and who the audience is.
Typically 15-20 pages long, a business plan is a document that explains what your business does, what you want to achieve in the business and the strategy you plan to use to get there. It details the opportunities you are going after, what resources you will need to achieve your goals and how you will define success.
How do I write a one page business plan? Describe the problem your product will solve or opening you fill, what the industry is like, your target market, key facts about your business, your launch plan, how youll market your product, the financial model, and how much funding you need.
In general, your one-page business plan can include: Vision statements and strategic objectives of your business. Customer segments your business will serve. Overview of the product or service youll provide. Sales goals and marketing strategy. High-level business overview of financial projections.
Depending on what youre using it for, a useful business plan can be any length, from a scrawl on the back of an envelope to, in the case of an especially detailed plan describing a complex enterprise, more than 100 pages.
Ten to fifteen pages are sufficient for small, internal reports. Corporate business plans can be hundreds of pages long. Startup and expansion plans used for potential investors, vendors or other business partners can be 20 to 40 pages.
But most plans will include the following main sections: Executive summary. This is your five-minute elevator pitch. Business description and structure. This is where you explain why youre in business and what youre selling. Market research and strategies. Management and personnel. Financial documents.
From surveys of investor needs, Growthink business plan consultants have found that 15 to 25 pages of text is the ideal length in which to accomplish this.
