The primary difference between a letter of resignation and a letter of retirement is that an employee is alerting the company of their plans to stop working and collect retirement benefits, which may be through an employer-sponsored pension.
Retirement is usually a permanent decision to leave the workforce (although you can continue working after retirement) Resignation is usually a decision to switch to a different job.
Dear Ms. Lee, I would like to inform you that I will be retiring effective November 1, 2021. I have truly enjoyed working for Acme Corporation, and I sincerely appreciate the support provided to me during my 10 years as part of the company.
This is a formal document, so you should write an actual letter rather than just an email. You might want to follow up with a brief email stating that you have submitted or will be submitting your retirement notice, but that shouldnt be the only form of notice you give.
Your employer gets to take back any unvested contributions. If there was no vesting schedule in other words, if 100% of employer contributions vested immediately then its all yours. (Of course, any money you put in yourself is always yours either way.)
A retirement letter is an official notice stating an individuals resignation from their position and to request any retirement benefits. Due to retirement commonly being a well-thought-out process, its best to give the employer six (6) to twelve (12) months notice.
Announcing a retirement too early carries some risk. Pillemer said the sweet spot of retirement announcements is about three to six months ahead of time.
What to Include in a Retirement Letter Start with a formal greeting. Use a professional tone. Be specific about your intentions. State your plan to retire clearly. Include your final day. Stay professional. Offer help. Add your contact details.
