If you're using Microsoft Excel on a Mac and are unable to open a file with an embedded file like a zip file directly from the program, you may receive a message stating that the source application is not activated. You won't be able to access the file even by copying and pasting it outside of Excel. However, there is a workaround: do not save the file, go to Finder, rename the file extension (e.g. from .zip to .sip), and ignore any warning messages. Then, right-click on the folder containing the file and open the terminal to access your file.
