The findings support recommendations in some countries, such as the United States, where a history of negative screening results is recommended for stopping screening at age 65, after which the risk of a new HPV infection developing into cervical cancer is very low, said Nicolas Wentzensen, M.D., Ph.
The short and simple answer for most women is yes. For those over 50 who have just entered menopause, It is recommended that you receive a pap test once every three years. However, this is mostly if you have had normal pap smear results three years in a row and you have no history of a pre-cancerous pap smear result.
The only sure way to find out if you have cervical cancer is to get a screening test (a Pap test, an HPV test, or both tests). If you are a woman who has not had her cervix removed by surgery (a hysterectomy), keep getting tested until you are at least age 65.
After age 65, you can stop having cervical cancer screenings if you have never had abnormal cervical cells or cervical cancer, and youve had two or three negative screening tests in a row, depending on the type of test.
Unsatisfactory Pap test results: The lab sample may not have had enough cells, or the cells may have been clumped together or hidden by blood or mucus. Your health care provider will ask you to come in for another Pap test in 2 to 4 months.
Avoid intercourse, douching, or using any vaginal medicines or spermicidal foams, creams or jellies for two days before having a Pap test. These may wash away or hide concerning cells. Try not to schedule a Pap test during your menstrual period. While it can be done at this time, it is best not to do so.
In general, women older than age 65 dont need Pap testing if their previous tests were negative and they have had three Pap tests, or two combined Pap and HPV tests, in the preceding 10 years. However, there are situations in which a health care provider may recommend continued Pap testing.
What are the different types of abnormal results? Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) Atypical squamous cells, cannot exclude HSIL (ASC-H) Atypical glandular cells (AGC)
