Spot colour is used by actually mixing ink into the desired colour you want in your print project, as opposed to using the CMYK process to achieve it. A special premixed ink is used instead of process inks and requires its own printing plate on a printed press.
Arguably the most well-known spot colour example is Pantone. Each colour within the Pantone library has a unique name and code, used by litho printers to reproduce the exact tone in print.
Spot color channels are designed to provide a channel for additional inks to be used in commercial printing. The location in the image where the ink should be applied is stored in the spot channel. A separate printing plate is generated, and an additional run through the press is required.
Spot Colour Printing uses a single (different) ink for each colour used (making it extremely precise), whereas the CMYK method uses only four colours: cyan, magenta, yellow and black (which can be mixed to create an almost infinite number of colours and shades, in just one printing press pass.
Spot color printing features a larger color palette than process colors, which makes more distinct colors possible, such as metallic or fluorescent hues. Each ink also requires its own printing plate and press when applied to designs, mean the print jobs can be costly and can take additional time to complete.
Spot color applies a premixed ink to the page. This color is usually identified by a color system such as the PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM. Spot color is useful for documents that require only a few colors, such as newsletters, brochures and stationery. Spot color is also used to match specific colors very closely.
Spot colors are solid colors created using a specific premixed ink, usually based on Pantone Matching System (PMS) colors. Pantone colors are standardized, and each one is assigned an individual number and name, which designers and printers in different locations can use to easily identify the same exact color.
