You cant. Arrays in C have a size that has to be specified when its declared. You can create a pointer. For example, here we cant get around specifying the size. But here we declare a pointer that well use as an array, without saying anything about how large the underlying memory will be.
Array Initialization with Declaration without Size If we initialize an array using an initializer list, we can skip declaring the size of the array as the compiler can automatically deduce the size of the array in these cases.
For example, you can create an array of size 1 (an array of size 1 is not the same as an int variable), which is an array with 1 element. You can even create an array of size 0, which is not nearly as useless as you might expect. All of these arrays have type int [].
The size is required to allocate the required space and hence size must be mentioned. Array is a data structures with following properties: Array has a fixed size. Data in the array is stored in a contiguous block of memory.
In C, the type of elements in the array should match with the data type of the array itself. The size of the array, also called the length of the array, must be specified in the declaration itself. Once declared, the size of a C array cannot be changed.
In a word - yes. You must specify the size of an array when you initialize it. Note that theres also a syntax to initialize an array from its elements (e.g. new int[]{1, 2, 3} ) which doesnt explicitly require the size, but deduces it from the number of elements you provided.
The Length of an array in C refers to the number of elements in the array. It must be specified at the time of declaration. It is also known as the size of an array that is used to determine the memory required to store all of its elements.
