When I say cover letters what I really mean is any means youre going to use to introduce yourself to the employer. That could be a cover letter, if companies still require one. It can be an email, perhaps with your resume attached, and it could be an application tracking system where they allow you to provide some notes about you, yourself, things that they should know about you. Really its whatever means youre going to use to introduce yourself. Now, theres a couple of precursors that I want to mention right before we dive into the four sentences. Theres three things that your introduction should do, and I believe you can do those in four sentences, but I want to talk a little bit about just cover letters and what the purpose was. You happen to have a very good reason for doing so, but that really isnt necessary. Its common and 100% okay to omit a job if you dont think it adds to your application (because its too long ago, because it was a short term role, because it isnt related to the position youre applying for, etc).
Theres no need to include personal information on a resume such as your social security number, marital status, nationality, sexual orientation, or spiritual beliefs. In fact, it is illegal for employers to ask for these personal details.
Do you need to include all the jobs youve ever had on your resume? Short answer: No, you dont. But be prepared to explain why an old job isnt listed on your resume if the prospective employer discovers it or asks about any employment gaps between the jobs you did list.
Background checks can include verification of your work history, education, criminal record, and other aspects of your background. For employment, background checks typically confirm past employers, positions held, employment dates, and reasons for leaving.
Employers can, and usually will, verify that youve worked at the jobs you list on your resume. However, they wont typically find past jobs that you havent listed on your resume unless you added them to your credit report or posted about them on social media.
Candidates usually provide a list of past employers while filling out job applications. Some companies ask for information on an applicants last three jobs. Others ask for all jobs worked over a period of years instead. Since this is where candidates might be untruthful, your screening efforts should focus here.
Leaving small jobs off a resume is fine when they dont add anything to the new position, but if the skills and experience align with the new job, include them on your resume. Remember this applies to both hard and soft skills, dont overlook the value of teamwork, leadership or adherence to deadlines.
In a nutshell, a simple background check wont provide the hiring manager with a list of your previous employers. People leave jobs off their resumes all the time. As long as theres no obvious unexplained gap on your resume, its unlikely that a potential employer will ever find out about these roles.
