This video will show you how to quote a phrase from a source rather than a complete sentence. So first lets look at what we would do if we did want to quote a complete sentence. So Ive read this article about telemedicine, and it has a sentence I like: There are certain advantages such as reduced travel and increased access. So lets see what that would look like if I quoted the complete sentence. I could say, ing to Bishop, There are certain advantages such as reduced travel and increased access. So Ive given the author credit--his name was Bishop--and Ive put quotation marks around the sentence that matches the source. You can use an ellipsisthree consecutive periods, with one space around each ( . . . )to leave out extra or unnecessary words. The ellipsis represents information that you are omitting from a quotation.
Words can be added or changed to a quote by using brackets. Changes can be used to correct tense or to add necessary information. Brackets can also be used to make the pronouns in a quote consistent. However, brackets should not be used to change the meaning of the quote.
If you omit a word or words from a quotation, you should indicate the deleted word or words by using ellipses, which are three periods ( . . . ) preceded and followed by a space.
With quoted material, use an ellipsis to indicate that a whole sentence or more or a whole paragraph or more has been omitted between the sentences you chose to use. Again, be careful to preserve the original ideas and intent of the author. Be sure to include the end-of-sentence punctuation along with the ellipsis.
An ellipsis is a series of three points with spaces between them (. . .) inserted into a quotation to indicate the omission of material from the original quotation.
APA Style (7th ed.) If you remove words from the middle of quotation, use three spaced ellipsis points (. . .) to indicate the change from the original quotation (American Psychological Association [APA], 2020, p. 275).
