Hi everyone. Im Jennifer from English with Jennifer. A common frustration students have is trying to find the right words when youre having a conversation. But guess what? Sometimes sounding more natural is not about saying certain words, but rather omitting them. Omit means to delete or leave something out. Have you ever seen this punctuation mark? Its called an ellipsis. Writers use it to indicate that words have been left out. Words are left unsaid. If youd like, you can watch my writing skills playlist and review the ellipsis and other punctuation marks in English. Right now, were going to focus on ellipsis in spoken English, spoken American English. Ill take you through some patterns. You need to be aware of them, listen for them, and be sure youre using them correctly and appropriately. Lets start! Ellipsis can happen at the beginning, the middle, or the end of a sentence. Think about how we give short answers to yes-no questions. We omit information at the end, from th

Examples from Collins dictionaries Omit the salt in this recipe. Our apologies to David Pannick for omitting his name from last weeks article. He fined all three and omitted them from the match. His new girlfriend had omitted to tell him she was married.
After verbs like learned, discovered, found (out), knew, felt, thought, it is quite natural to omit that, especially in informal speech: I discovered Julian had borrowed my car without my permission. I felt he was wrong to do this, but he thought it would be all right.
It is writing that practices the prescription to omit needless words. The key phrase here is needless words. These are words that muddy your writing: they distract the reader from central ideas, fail to carry their weight in meaning or impact, or cloud the readers picture of the world you are building.
Writers can omit that with bridge verbs. Linguists define bridge verbs as verbs of common speech or though: saythink know, claim hear, or believe For these simple verbs, its fine to omit the that.
Omission of That You can omit that in that-clauses which serve as a direct object without causing any ambiguity. This omission is more common in informal speech and writing. However, that cannot be removed after verbs like reply and shout.
Usually its incorrect to omit the subject of a sentence but there are some exceptions: imperatives - the version without the subject is normal, the other is emphatic (e.g. Get your hands off!) ellipsis - in informal spoken English at the beginning of a sentence if the meaning is clear (e.g. Must dash!)
That is often used to introduce defining relative clauses when they follow the words something, anything, everything, nothing, all or a superlative. It may be omitted when it is not the subject of the clause.
However, in the English Language, you have a choice to omit it or use it. As a matter of fact, modern American English sounds better when THAT is omitted. Of course, THAT can be omitted or avoided only when it is either a CONJUNCTION(in a noun phrase) or a RELATIVE PRONOUN.
