If you are referring to an idea from another work (paraphrasing or summarizing) but NOT directly quoting the material, you only have to make reference to the author and year of publication and not the page number in your in-text reference.
Adding or omitting words in quotations If you omit a word or words from a quotation, you should indicate the deleted word or words by using ellipses, which are three periods ( . . . ) preceded and followed by a space.
To add or omit information from a quotation within the text, the correct approach is to use brackets [ ] around the information you add and ellipses enclosed in brackets [] for information you omit.
Use an ellipsis (three dots) to omit or remove parts of a quote and show where youve removed text. Dont change the meaning of the quote when you do this.
Adding Information to a Quotation The information that you add always should be brief; reserve your major comments on the quotations information to be placed after the quotation ends. Show any added information by placing that added information in square brackets within the quote.
You can use an ellipsisthree consecutive periods, with one space around each ( . . . )to leave out extra or unnecessary words. The ellipsis represents information that you are omitting from a quotation.
Use an ellipsis to omit information from a direct quote. You can use an ellipsis to remove some of the unneeded words. However, DO NOT omit words in order to change the original meaning or intent of the original author. Take care to preserve the original meaning of the quote.
