Letamp;#39;s talk about writing dialogue and using sources. Letamp;#39;s look at an example of each of those, Susanne. - [Susanne] Sure. Look at this sentence. With dialogue, we put periods and commas inside of the quotation marks, like this. - [Kate] Thatamp;#39;s right. Periods are one of three punctuation marks for the end of a sentence, along with question marks and exclamation points. You cant put a period at the end of every sentence, however. Specifically, you only use a period to end declarative sentences (statements) or imperative sentences (commands).
American English puts periods after abbreviations. Dr., Mr., Mrs., Ms., and vs. all have periods after them.
An ellipsis ( ) consists of three evenly spaced periods and is used to indicate the omission of words or suggest an incomplete thought. In general, an ellipsis should be treated as a three-letter word, with a space, three periods and a space.
Dont use periods at the end of phrases or dependent clauses. If you do, you create sentence fragments. When she visits cities in the East, Tracey expects bad weather. not When she visits cities in the East.
The end of a complete sentence should be marked by a period, a question mark, or an exclamation point. If a sentence is not complete and it is terminated by a period, we have a sentence fragment as in the sentence below.
The period is used to end all sentences except those that are direct questions or exclamations. Periods are also used in abbreviations.
Place a period after a complete statement. Example: The weather is hot today. Periods can also be used to end common abbreviations (e.g. Dr. or Mrs.). Note: Periods are not used with acronyms (e.g. FBI, UN, NAACP, IRS, etc.)
All sentences need punctuation at the end. You can use a period to express a neutral tone, a question mark to show that the sentence is an inquiry, or an exclamation point to indicate excitement or a command.
