Re: Does has an error message an dot at the end or not? It depends. If its written in a very compact form then most of the time I dont use a dot at the end. If its an error where you ask a user how to continue in a situation then it should be a correct sentence following grammar and orthography rules.
An error message should only contain necessary information. Most of the time, the user isnt willing to read a long story. Be concise and write a short description that is meaningful for the user and gives him a clear idea of the problem and how to resolve it.
Validation messages should be clear, consistent, and literate. Punctuation can be used to accomplish these ends. +2 for literate. Personally, I think whole, punctuated sentences communicate most effectively.
Use proper grammar Each sentence in the string assigned to the Exception. Message property should end in a period. For example, The log table has overflowed. uses correct grammar and punctuation.
The mid-text full stop is still fair game. Only when it is the last character in a message does the full stop assume its tonal heft. I do get this as I speak to my friends very differently from those in my professional life.
I concur with recommendations above that the short error title should not have punctuation but the detailed message should be worded as a full sentence and should have a period.
