Many professional photographers shoot in RAW because the format captures the highest level of detail. It can often be easier to edit exposure later with a RAW file. However, shooting in JPEG has its benefits, since their smaller file sizes allow you to shoot more images at once and transfer files faster.
A raw file is simply the raw, unedited data collected by the cameras sensor. Its not really even an image file yet just a matrix of numbers. Different brands and models save this info differently, and it needs to be decoded (using software such as Photoshop, Lightroom etc) before you can even visualise it.
The main drawback of shooting RAW is how much space the files swallow up. This is the tradeoff you have to make for that higher image quality. Photographer Jenn Byrne emphasizes the importance of having enough storage on hand when shooting RAW.
[FINE] and [FINE+RAW] use lower JPEG compression ratios for higher-quality JPEG images, while [NORMAL] and [NORMAL+RAW] use higher JPEG compression ratios to increase the number of images that can be stored.
1 Answer. RAW mode produces only a RAW file for each picture; RAW + L mode produces two files for each picture: both a RAW file and a (full-size) JPEG.
Each has different advantages. The Fine mode uses less compression when storing a picture. Therefore, the recorded pictures will have better quality than those recorded in the Standard mode. However, since there is less compression, the file size is larger and requires more memory space for storage.
ProRAW gives you greater creative control when editing photos. Apple ProRAW combines the information of a standard RAW format along with iPhone image processing, which gives you more flexibility when editing the exposure, color, and white balance in your photo.
