In a printed circuit board (PCB), a buried via connects two or more inner layers without docHubing the outer layer. In comparison, a blind via connects the exterior layer about one or many middle layers. Micro vias are a more compact alternative to blind and buried vias and connect neighboring ring layers.
The Microvia is a blind structure with a maximum aspect ratio of 1:1 between hole diameter and depth, with a total depth of no more than 0.25 mm, when measured from the surface to the target pad or plane. Typically NCAB considers the dielectric thickness between surface and reference pad to be 60 80um.
A skipped via is a connection over at least two lay-up layers that directly connects the outer layer with an inner layer electrically without connecting the intermediate layer. Example: Laser hole from layer 1 to layer 3 without connecting layer 2.
Skip vias can be made overlapping, blind, or buried. Their similarity to blind vias is in their ability to connect the top or bottom layer to an internal layer of a PCB. Blind vias would connect successive PCB layers but the skip via can make connections through multiple layers.
Microvias are used as the interconnects between layers in high density interconnect (HDI) substrates and printed circuit boards (PCBs) to accommodate the high input/output (I/O) density of advanced packages.
Buried Vias exist between inner layers and do not begin or end on an outer layer. Stacked Vias are infused with electroplated copper to interconnect high density layers.
Microvias are extremely versatile and can be stacked together, or on top of a buried via, but have a higher fabrication cost associated with them. Via-in-pad (VIP): These vias can either be standard thru-hole vias or microvias, but their position in a surface mount pad makes them unique.
Buried via: Makes connection between inner layers and is not accessible on either side of the board. Micro-via: A micro-via is a really small via that is cut with a laser. They have special requirements known as aspect ratio that limits them from cutting through thick material such as PCB core material.
