The new $600 rule Under the new rules set forth by the IRS, if you got paid more than $600 for the transaction of goods and services through third-party payment platforms, you will receive a 1099-K for reporting the income.
On November 21, 2023, in Notice 2023-74, the IRS decided to further delay the implementation of this reporting change until the 2024 tax year and increase the $600 threshold to $5,000.
This means the IRS experienced a higher volume than normal of electronic payments, which has caused a docHub delay in processing payment records for payments received on or after April 18, 2024.
If youre a freelancer or gig worker who receives payments via apps like Venmo, Zelle, Cash App or PayPal, your tax reporting requirements will change for the 2024 tax year. The law will not affect the amount of taxes owed, but it will change how you report income with 1099-K forms.
Heres what you need to know For 2023, all sellers who docHub the $600 threshold must provide a Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) to access any blocked funds. Learn how to compute gains and losses.
Does Zelle report any payments I receive over $600 to the IRS? Zelle does not report any transactions made on the Zelle Network to the IRS, even if the total is more than $600. The law requiring certain payment networks to provide forms 1099K for information reporting does not apply to the Zelle Network.
What You Need to Know. Starting this year, earnings of $600 or more via online platforms like PayPal, Venmo and Etsy must be reported to the IRS on Form 1099-K. Legislation in 2021 dropped this threshold from $20,000. After years of delay, the change becomes effective for tax year 2024.
