A doc fee is typically charged to car buyers by car dealerships to process a vehicles paperwork. Many states in the U.S. dont regulate the amount of money a dealer can charge for a doc fee, though some states do. Doc fees are taxable, and dealers consider them profit centers. As a result, its negotiable.
No, your doc fee has nothing to do with seeing a doctor. Rather, it is the amount the dealership charges you for handling all the detailed paperwork and for filing your new car with the state in order to get it registered and to get license plates.
Most dealerships will not negotiate the doc fee itself, but there may be a workaround. If the doc fee is substantially higher than your states median, which is listed in the chart, negotiate the cars price more aggressively to offset the fee. And keep in mind that dealers also charge sales tax on the doc fee.
On January 12, 2023, the maximum allowable documentary fee increased to $374 for processing title work manually and $449 for processing title work online.
Know that you can and should negotiate the doc fee with a car dealer. Also know that the dealer will never actually remove the fee from your buyers order, instead they will reduce the selling price of the vehicle by the same amount as the doc fee.
Doc fees arent generally negotiable, though some dealerships may be willing to haggle under certain circumstances. What is negotiable, however, is the sticker price. If you know to expect a doc fee on top of the ordinary sales value, you can try to knock off a couple hundred dollars to account for the added cost.
North Carolina and Virginia both report a price of $599, making them the second states with the highest doc fees. Georgia follows closely with doc fees of $545. Maryland, Missouri, Tennessee, and Wyoming all have doc fees of $500, placing them among the states with the highest fees.
