Accounting Standards Codification (ASC) 205-20, Presentation of Financial Statements Discontinued Operations, provides guidance on the presentation and disclosure of discontinued operations, including criteria for determining when the presentation of discontinued operations is appropriate.
Even if a discontinued operation is disposed of by sale before the end of a reporting period and therefore there are no assets and liabilities held for sale to be presented at the current balance sheet date, the assets and liabilities of the discontinued operation must be presented separately in the prior period
Disclosures begin after the earlier of the following: the company has entered into an agreement to sell substantially all of the assets of the discontinuing operation; or. its board of directors or other similar governing body has both approved and announced the planned discontinuance. [IAS 35.16]
First, the asset or business component must be disposed of or reported as being held for sale. Second, the component must be distinguishable as a separate business that is being removed from operation intentionally or a subsidiary of a component being held with the intent to sell.
Parts of a companys business or product line will typically be classified as a discontinued operation if they are no longer operational, have been removed from the company, or have been, or will be sold (referred to as being held for sale).
Discontinued Operations Under IFRS First, the asset or business component must be disposed of or reported as being held for sale. Second, the component must be distinguishable as a separate business that is being removed from operation intentionally or a subsidiary of a component being held with the intent to sell.
If an entity chooses to present the discontinued operations major classes of assets and liabilities in the footnotes, it must also provide a reconciliation of those amounts to the discontinued operations total current and noncurrent assets and liabilities presented on the balance sheet itself.
What to disclose a description of the discontinuing operation; the business or geographical segment(s) in which it is reported in ance with IAS 14; the date that the plan for discontinuance was announced; the timing of expected completion, if known or determinable;
