Rule 10.6. 2 was added to bring The Bluebook into conformity with current U.S. Supreme Court practice regarding citations to stay or bail applications ruled on by a single Justice. Rule 10.8. 1(a) provides clearer guidance on citing to case docket numbers.
Rule 4.2(a) governs the use of supra. Supra may be used to refer to a previously fully cited authority, unless id. would be more appropriate or supra cannot be used. In the below examples, supra is appropriate because an authority was fully cited in an earlier footnote, but not the immediately preceding one.
Volume Page Number(s) The rules on page numbers are in the early sections of the Bluebook (Rule 3.2) and apply to everything. For Volume number (Rule 3.1) - it may seem obvious, but this is the volume of the reporter in which your opinion is located/printed.
Bluebook rule 10.3. 1(b) states that citations to the appropriate regional reporter are preferred. Bluebook table T1 provides guidance on how to properly abbreviate reporter names. For quick reference, you may consult the Examples of Abbreviations material in Tarltons Finding a Case guide.
Page Numbers: When citing multiple pages, give the inclusive page numbers and retain the last two digits of each page, but drop other repetitious digits (Rule 3.2(a)). bluebook (Rule 1.4).
Rule 10 (and Rule B10 in the Bluepages) governs how to cite cases. It contains extensive instructions on how to format case citations, and Rule 10 also provides guidance on citing briefs, court filings, and transcripts.
