Reference: Chapter Author(s) Last name, Initials. (Year) Chapter title, in Editor(s) Last name, Initials (ed.) Title. Place of publication: Publisher, page range.
When an electronic source lacks page numbers, you should try to include information that will help readers find the passage being cited. Use the heading or section name, an abbreviated heading or section name, a paragraph number (para. 1), or a combination of these.
Titles of books and reports are italicized or underlined; titles of articles and chapters are in quotation marks.
If you are referencing a book with chapters written by different authors, you need to give details of the chapter, and the book in which you read it. Family name, INITIAL(S). Year. Chapter title.
That is the only instance when you would be cite a chapter instead of the whole book. If the book has chapters written by different authors (compilation), then cite the chapter(s) used. If it isnt a compilation, then cite the whole book.
If you are citing a chapter in a book where the author wrote all of the chapters, simply cite the entire book. For edited books with authors for different chapters use the chapter authors name for your in-text citation and at the beginning of your reference list citation.
Citing a Book Chapter: Print Version General Format: In-Text Citation (Paraphrase): (Authors Last Name of Chapter, year) In-Text Citation (Direct Quote): (Authors Last Name of Chapter, year, page number) References: Chapter Authors Last Name, First Initial. Second Initial. (Year). Chapter or article title. Examples:
If a source has no author, start the MLA Works Cited entry with the source title. Use a shortened version of the title in your MLA in-text citation.
The MLA Handbook suggests using chapter or paragraph numbers when no page numbers are available, but only if the chapter or paragraphs are explicitly included in the original text. If there are no page, chapter, paragraph, or section numbers in the original text, then no numbers should be included in the citation.
If you are directly quoting from a work, you will need to include the author, year of publication, and page number for the reference (preceded by p. for a single page and pp. for a span of multiple pages, with the page numbers separated by an en dash).
