Create a Table of Contents OpenOffice 3.2. 1 Open your document in OpenOffice 3.2. Highlight the first heading that you would like to include in your table of contents. Click Insert in the toolbar at the top of the screen and scroll to find Indexes and Tables. Select Entry.
Click the Format drop down and choose Numbering. Click the None option, even if it already appears to be selected. Confirm the new settings by clicking OK twice. Word removes the numbering from Heading 1.
Click in the header and select Insert Fields Other. 3. On the fields dialog, select the Document tab, then select Type:Chapter and Format: Chapter name. Click Insert, then Close.
Add chapter numbers to captions in Word Select the first chapter heading in your document. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click the arrow next to Multilevel List. Click a chapter-numbering list definition (one that includes the text Heading 1 or Chapter 1).
Turn on /View /non printing characters (that same command turns it off), position your cursor at top of text on the page (i.e. not in the page header) after the page you wish to Delete, and press backspace. If that doesnt do what you wish, immediately use /Edit /Undo (or Ctrl Z).
In some cases, you may find that Word has added Chapter X before some of your Heading 1 sections that arent chapters (like Acknowledgements or Bibliography). All you need to do is go to each of those sections, place your cursor after Chapter X, and press Backspace to delete it.
