Eating 600 calories a day for a prolonged period will help you lose weight. However, it may come with side effects, including muscle loss, fatigue, reduced libido, malnutrition, increased cortisol, amenorrhea (in women), and possibly disordered eating.

Evidence suggests that, with a 600 kcal/day calorie deficit (see above), weight loss of 0.5 1.0 kg (1-2 lbs) per week and/or 5-10 % weight loss over 3-6 months, is realistic and achievable (3).
So, if a persons maintenance calories (the number of calories needed to maintain their current weight) is around 2,000 per day, consuming 600 calories would create a deficit of approximately 1,400 calories daily. In a week, this could theoretically lead to a weight loss of approximately 2.8 pounds.
Generally, the rule of thumb is to consume at least 12 to 15 calories per pound of body weight. That would mean that a 600-pound person would need to eat between 7200 and 9000 calories each day to maintain their weight without gaining or losing.
In general, if you cut about 500 calories a day from your usual diet, you may lose about to 1 pound a week. But this can vary depending on your body, how much weight you want to lose, your gender and activity level. It sounds simple.
