On November 21, 2023, in Notice 2023-74, the IRS decided to further delay the implementation of this reporting change until the 2024 tax year and increase the $600 threshold to $5,000.
What You Need to Know. Starting this year, earnings of $600 or more via online platforms like PayPal, Venmo and Etsy must be reported to the IRS on Form 1099-K. Legislation in 2021 dropped this threshold from $20,000. After years of delay, the change becomes effective for tax year 2024.
However, this reporting delay is temporary, as the IRS plans on using a phased-in approach starting in 2024. However, whether you receive a Form 1099-K or not, the income from the sales of goods or services is taxable, and you will need to include it on your tax return.
Citi Checking: $500 Bonus. Flushing Bank: Personal Checking Account - $500 Bonus. Utah First Credit Union: Personal Checking Account - Up to $500 Bonus. Fidelity Bank (PA): Personal Checking and Savings Account - $500.
The new $600 rule Under the new rules set forth by the IRS, if you got paid more than $600 for the transaction of goods and services through third-party payment platforms, you will receive a 1099-K for reporting the income.
Yes. The IRS requires that you report all of your income, even if its less than $600 and you didnt get a tax form for it. Follow these steps to enter your income. Well ask you some questions to determine if your income is from self-employment or is ordinary income.
Under this new reporting rule, if you received over $600 through an online platform, you would get a Form 1099-K, and so would the IRS. By lowering the threshold to $600 and notifying the IRS after one transaction is made, the government is making it harder for taxpayers to avoid paying those taxes.
Note: The $600 threshold has been delayed and the IRS plans to phase in a $5,000 threshold for the 2024 tax year.
