Is secondment the same as fixed term?

Secondment is the temporary transfer of an employee to a different post or area of NHSBT or to another organisation, for a specific purpose and time. This arrangement is mutually agreed. Fixed-term is used for external recruitment for a specific reason.

How long before a secondment become permanent?

Secondments will normally be limited to a maximum of 2 years after which the individual will be expected to return to their substantive post. Secondments should normally be granted provided they meet the following criteria: that the secondment will provide personal and professional development for the individual.

Can you step down from a secondment?

Exceptionally, if the secondee requests this, or if there is a business need, or if the secondee is underperforming in the role, the manager may consider an early termination of the secondment arrangement.

Is a secondment a promotion?

A secondment is a temporary move between one job and another, other than a temporary promotion as defined below, which usually involves a transfer from one line manager to another. Secondments can be within a department, to another department or even between different organisations.

What happens at the end of a secondment?

At the end of secondment Prior to the end of the period of secondment, a meeting should be arranged between the secondee and their substantive line manager to discuss the implications of returning to their substantive post, and in order to update the individual on any changes within the department.

How does a secondment agreement work?

A secondment agreement is a legal contract that allows an employer to temporarily transfer an employee to another business location either within the company or to a separate organization. Secondment agreements are valuable for employees who would like to advance their skillset and professional development.

How long can you stay on secondment?

Secondments may be full or part time. Secondments should normally be for a period of two years or less. If the secondment is to be for a period of longer than 23 months, then the arrangement must be considered under the Fixed Term Work (Prevention of Less Favourable Treatment) Regulations 2002.

Do you get paid differently on secondment?

Salary and compensation Secondments that hold similar responsibilities and pay levels to existing work may have no changes in salary or compensation. Roles that involve increased responsibility or training may increase compensation in line with the job requirements.
