Its best practice to give at least one month in advance, and more if youre applying to graduate school. At absolute minimum, you want to give them a two weeks notice. This will allow them to reflect on your work and character, and have a conversation with you if they want more information.
Only include information on grades, GPA, or MCAT scores if you also provide context to help interpret them. Grades, GPA, and MCAT scores are available within the application. 5. Focus on behaviors you have observed directly when describing an applicants suitability for medical school.
ASK WELL IN ADVANCE of the deadline. Give 2 weeks at minimum, or 4-6 weeks for a longer letter. For grad school, this means asking your recommenders in September or October.
The letter should be about one page in length and generally consist of three parts: opening, body, and closing.
Current professors and doctors with whom you work or volunteer are your best choices. But former professors and doctors with whom youve worked in the past are fine, too. (If youre applying to osteopathic schools, you must have a letter from a DO.)
Start early. Ideally, give the person three to four weeks, but never less than two weeks to complete the recommendation. Most faculty and staff are very busy and have numerous recommendations to write, so you want to be courteous.
These are some important steps to take into consideration as soon as you anticipate needing a reference letter. At a minimum, you should give your recommenders a months advance notice. Ideally, you should give your recommenders about two to three months advance notice.
Recommendation Letters. Most graduate schools require 3 letters of recommendation. However, you should double-check how many each school requires, and do NOT send more than asked for. Sending too many letters or information not requested by the school, can actually HURT your candidacy.
