Under the Canada Labour Code, an employee is entitled to a leave of absence of up to 10 days in the event of a death of a family member.
Bereavement leave (paid and unpaid) As an employee, you are entitled to up to 10 days of bereavement leave in the event of a death of an immediate family members death.
There is no set legal amount of time off work you are entitled to after someone has died. It is common for employers to give about three to five days, but all organisations have different policies and/or exercise their discretion differently.
Employees in Quebec are entitled to a maximum of five days off, including two paid days, for an immediate family members death or one unpaid day for the death of a grandchild, grandparent or in-law.
Under the Canada Labour Code, an employee is entitled to a leave of absence of up to 10 days in the event of a death of a family member.
Upon the death of a family member, an employee is entitled to bereavement leave of up to five days which may be taken during the period beginning on the date of death and ending six weeks after the date of the next of funeral, burial or memorial service, whichever is later.
Can I Take Bereavement Leave? Employees are entitled to a reasonable amount of unpaid time off to take action, which is necessary as a consequence of the death of their spouse, civil partner, child or parent, or a person who lives in the same household as the employee (excluding tenants, lodgers and boarders).
Reasons bereavement leave may be taken spouse (includes both married and unmarried couples, of the same or opposite genders) parent, step-parent, foster parent, child, step-child, foster child, grandparent, step-grandparent, grandchild or step-grandchild of the employee or the employees spouse.
