Obstacle course racing (OCR) is a sport in which a competitor, traveling on foot, must overcome various physical challenges in the form of obstacles.
Obstacle course racing, or OCR, is one such sport, and it combines running, swimming, and strength-based obstacles for a complete, total-body workout.
Generally speaking, OCR training is a mix of endurance/aerobic training and strength training. Youll do some workouts that are focused on increasing your endurance. Others will focus on strength and prepare you to deal with obstacles where youre climbing over walls (or under them) and carrying awkward, heavy objects.
Spartan Race is the worlds premier obstacle course race (OCR). An OCR is a running race with the additional challenge of obstacles along the course. These obstacles require athletes to have a complete fitness level (cardiovascular fitness + strength + mobility).
Most competitors do at least 3-5 sessions a week, alternating their days of running with strength and event-specific training. Some elite OCR athletes bump up to 5-6 times a week. Runs should be in the hour to two-hour range at a moderate pace. Work on good form and breathing.
OCR Training Tips Improving core strength and mobility. Building strength and stability across the hips, midsection, and shoulders. Developing explosive movements, such as jumping and leaping. Increasing endurance. Creating seamless transitions between obstacles.
