A notary public is typically a solicitor that has taken another qualification to become a notary public. There are a few notaries that are not also solicitors but this is less common. The primary function of a notary public is the certification or authentication of documents and signatures.
The principal role of a notary in England and Wales is to attest the authenticity of deeds and other legal documents for use abroad. Attesting means much more than simple certification (checking copies against the originals).
Notarisation of a document is verification, authentication, certification or attestation of any instrument by a Notary appointed under the Notaries Act, 1952 whereas Registration of a document is registration in the office of the Registering Officer appointed under the Registration Act, 1908.
