If youre ready to ask for bereavement leave, here are a few tips to make the process as easy as possible. Notify Your Employer as Soon as Possible. Pick up the Phone. Determine How Much Time off You Need and Create a Timeline. Write a Written Request. Review the Request and Send It Off.
A form of leave for the death of an immediate family member. Permanent or probationary full-time State employees and excluded employees are granted bereavement leave with pay for the death of an immediate family member.
This means that you may have employees taking a full workweek off for a death in the family or merely switching to shortened workweeks for a 3 month period. While the leave is unpaid, employees are entitled to use their vacation, personal leave, accrued and available sick leave, or other available paid time off (PTO).
Hi, [Name]. I just wanted to let you know that my [family member] has passed away and I am going to be requesting bereavement leave. Can you let me know what I need to do to get that leave approved?
What is bereavement leave? Bereavement leave is time off granted to an employee in the event that a loved one passes away. The intention is to allow for employees to grieve, attend funeral services or a memorial, or deal with financial and legal matters that may come up after death.
Under the law, employees are entitled to 10 days of unpaid bereavement leave to: Attend the funeral, make arrangements for, or grieve the death of a covered family member (a step/child, spouse, domestic partner, sibling, step/parent, parent-in-law, grandchild or grandparent)
Some others treat bereavement leave as a PTO or vacation day and yet others make it a distinct type of leave, providing an additional 3 to 5 days in the event of each loss. In most cases, it is a paid leave but again that is not required.
An employee is entitled to use a total of up to 104 hours (13 days) of sick leave each leave year for family care and bereavement, which include making arrangements required by the death of a family member and attending the funeral of a family member.
