The WHO has defined AFP as any child under 15 years of age with acute onset of focal weakness or paralysis (including GBS) or any person with paralytic illness at any age when polio suspected, characterized by flaccid (reduced tone), without other obvious causes (e.g. trauma)[5, 9].
What causes acute flaccid myelitis (AFM)? AFM can be caused by several different viruses. Researchers think that enteroviruses have been causing the recent increases in the number of children with AFM. AFM can also be caused by other viruses, including flaviviruses, herpesviruses, and adenoviruses.
Causes of Flaccid Paralysis A common cause of flaccid paralysis is anterior spinal artery syndrome, in which the anterior spinal artery is blocked. Blockage can be caused by spinal cord trauma, cancer, arterial disease, or thrombosis.
Definition. A type of paralysis in which a muscle becomes soft and yields to passive stretching, which results from loss of all or practically all peripheral motor nerves that innervated the muscle. Muscle tone is reduced and the affected muscles undergo extreme atrophy within months of the loss of innervation. [
The signs and symptoms of AFP depends on the cause but common symptoms include; muscle atrophy, fever onset, respiratory insufficiency, tingling of the palms and soles of the feet, cramps, and sensory loss, and loss of bladder control.
Flaccid, also called peripheral or atrophic, is characterized by the loss of voluntary movement and is accompanied by decreased muscle tone (muscles appear flabby and thinned, in the case of botulism infection). The flaccid paralysis can also affect individual muscles.
AFP is defined by the acute onset of weakness or paralysis with reduced muscle tone in children. There are many infectious and non-infectious causes of AFP. Polio, caused by the wild poliovirus (the natural circulating strain) is one of the causes of AFP.
Flaccid paralysis is a neurological condition characterized by weakness or paralysis and reduced muscle tone without other obvious cause (e.g., trauma). This abnormal condition may be caused by disease or by trauma affecting the nerves associated with the involved muscles.
