In grammar, negation is when certain words or entire sentences are nullified or shown to be untrue by adding a special type of word called a negative. The most common example is the negative adverb not, used with auxiliary verbs like do or be to negate the original meaning of a sentence.
Other negative words include no, none, nothing, nobody, nowhere, and never. In many cases, a negative word can be formed by adding the prefix un- to the positive form of a word (as in unhappy and undecided). Other negative affixes (called negators) include a-, de-, dis-, in-, -less, and mis-.
The symbols used to represent the negation of a statement are ~ or . For example, the given sentence is Arjuns dog has a black tail. Then, the negation of the given statement is Arjuns dog does not have a black tail. Thus, if the given statement is true, then the negation of the given statement is false.
The most common negative words are no and not. Other negative words include: neither, never, no one, nobody, none, nor, nothing, nowhere: Shes never been abroad.
Consider the statement I am both rich and happy. For this statement to be false I could be either not rich or not happy. If we let A be the statement I am rich and B be the statement I am happy, then the negation of A and B becomes I am not rich or I am not happy or Not A or Not B.
Three main types of negative marking are identified: morphological negation, negative particles and negative verbs.
The logical negation symbol looks like a dash with a tail or the top half of a rectangle. The negation symbol is a unary logical operator. It simply reverses the truth value of a given statement. Thus, if a statement is represented as A, then A is the logical opposite or negation of A.
Examples of Negation: Rick is not here. Peter has no books. Sam has never been there. John did nothing for this project. Neither I nor you attended the program. None of us liked the movie. Pam has rarely cooked any food. Richard is buying unnecessary things.
