The category negative (for malignancy) is utilized when the adequate cytologic sample does not contain material indicative of malignancy or any degree of cellular atypia beyond that clearly associated with reactive change.
Listen to pronunciation. (NEH-guh-tiv reh-ZULT) A Pap test finding that means no cancer cells or other abnormal cells have been found on the surface of or in the tissue that lines the cervix.
Negative for malignancy means that no cancer cells were seen when the tissue sample was examined under the microscope. Pathologists use the word malignant to describe cancers. This result is typically used when only a small sample of tissue is sent for examination under the microscope.
Malignant tumors are cancerous (ie, they invade other sites). They spread to distant sites via the bloodstream or the lymphatic system. This spread is called metastasis. Metastasis can occur anywhere in the body and most commonly is found in the liver, lungs, brain, and bone.
Positive for malignancy means that cancer cells were seen in the tissue sample examined under the microscope. It is commonly used to report the results of a small tissue sample such as a core needle biopsy, fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB), or Pap smear.
What are the different types of abnormal results? Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) Atypical squamous cells, cannot exclude HSIL (ASC-H) Atypical glandular cells (AGC)
Not cancer. Nonmalignant tumors may grow larger but do not spread to other parts of the body. Also called benign.
A normal test result may also be called a negative test result or negative for intraepithelial lesion (area of abnormal growth) or malignancy. Unsatisfactory Pap test results: The lab sample may not have had enough cells, or the cells may have been clumped together or hidden by blood or mucus.
