Structure and history From the 12th century, the gate was used as a prison for debtors and felons. Jack Cade was beheaded publicly in Newgate after the conclusion of his failed rebellion. The notorious Newgate Prison, was later extended to the south on the site of the modern Central Criminal Court on Old Bailey.
Newgate Street is a street in the western section of the City of London. As the name suggests, it was the site of a gate that was part of the old London Wall. The Romans built the first fortifications around 200 C.E., and Newgate was one of the original gatehouses for this fortification.
Towards the end of the eighteenth century, all public executions were moved to Newgate and this coincided with a greater use of the death penalty, even for crimes previously considered too minor to merit the ultimate sentence.
Newgate was the original London gate on the west side of the city. New Gate spanned the Roman road that led out west through the streets now known as Newgate Street, Holborn, Oxford Street, Bayswater Road, and Notting Hill Gate. The road then continued onwards to the settlement of Silchester and the West of England.
Definitions of Newgate. noun. a former prison in London notorious for its unsanitary conditions and burnt down in riots in 1780; a new prison was built on the same spot but was torn down in 1902. example of: prison, prison house. a correctional institution where persons are confined while on trial or for punishment.
The Old Baileys history dates back to the late 17th century when it was originally constructed as a Sessions House to handle the growing number of criminal trials in London. Designed by renowned architect Edward Mountford, the buildings imposing facade reflects the seriousness of its purpose.
