To remove the large space above footnotes in Word, we first of all go to the Home tab and in the Paragraph section we activate the formatting symbols. Because now we can see what is causing the huge empty space, its actually a bunch of empty paragraphs before the footnotes. To remove this extra space, we go to the View tab and activate the Draft view. Then we go to the References tab and click on Show Footnotes. In the bottom window, we now open the dropdown and select Footnote Separator. And as you can see here we have all these empty paragraphs, that we can simply delete. Once that is done, we go the View tab again reset the view to the standard Print layout and with that, the space above the footnotes is gone. The periods you see are just formatting marks denoting spaces. They do not print. In the default toolbars there is a funny backward on a button. Click the button to stop displaying the formatting marks.
Go to Design Paragraph Spacing. Choose an option. To single space your document, select No Paragraph Space.
To remove dot leaders: Select the entire table. On the Layout ribbon, click the launch button in the bottom right of the Paragraph section. In the Paragraph window, click Tabs. In the Leader section, select 1 None. Click OK.
Click on the Line and Paragraph Spacing icon in the Home Ribbon. Select Remove Extra Space to remove the extra space.
In Word, these markers indicate the ends of paragraphs, and are created when you press RETURN at the end of a line. You will also see other characters which are normally invisible, such as spaces, which appear as dots between words and tabs, which appear as tiny arrows.
