A Pap test finding that means no cancer cells or other abnormal cells have been found on the surface of or in the tissue that lines the cervix. Cell changes that suggest inflammation or infection may be included in this finding. Also called negative Pap test result, NILM, and normal Pap test result.
HPV Myth #3: If you test negative for HPV, you cant spread it. The HPV virus can lay dormant (inactive) for years after being contracted. Truth: The HPV virus can actually lay dormant (inactive) for years after being contracted from a partner.
The researchers estimated that the following number of women would go on to develop cervical cancer after a negative test: Pap-negative: 20 per 100,000 women over three years. HPV-negative: 11 per 100,000 women over three years. Cotest-negative: 14 per 100,000 women over five years.
Pap tests, sometimes called Pap smears, look for abnormal cells on your cervix that can possibly lead to cervical cancer. Pap tests find cell changes caused by high-risk HPV, but they dont test for HPV itself.
A Pap test screens for cellular abnormalities caused by HPV. A negative Pap test means that no cellular abnormalities were identified under the microscope after both computer-guided screening and re-screening by trained cytotechnologists.
The original negative Pap test was confirmed in 98.6% of these cases, and a cellular abnormality was found in only 1.4% (6 patients). This data supports that most patients with a negative Pap and a positive HPV just have an HPV infection.
A normal (or negative) result means that no cell changes were found on your cervix. This is good news. But you still need to get Pap tests in the future. New cell changes can still form on your cervix. Your doctor may tell you that you can wait three years for your next screening test if you received a Pap test only.
Negative for intra-epithelial lesions and malignancy (NILM): This means your test was normal, or negative. Thats great news!
Negative for Intraepithelial Lesions (normal, NIL)
Results from your HPV test will come back as either positive or negative. Positive HPV test. A positive test result means that you have a type of high-risk HPV thats linked to cervical cancer. Negative HPV test. A negative test result means that you dont have any of the types of HPV that cause cervical cancer.
