Hi, Iamp;#39;m Meris, and in this video, Iamp;#39;m going to be talking to you about different type of diagnostic procedures which can be performed in pregnancy. Specifically, weamp;#39;re going to be talking about ultrasound, chorionic villus sampling, and amniocentesis in this video. Iamp;#39;m going to be following along using our maternity flashcards. These are available on our website LevelUpRN.com. So if you want a set, grab a set, and if you have one already, I would invite you to follow along with me. All right, letamp;#39;s get started. So first up, we are talking about ultrasound, which is a very common diagnostic procedure performed in pregnancy. Thereamp;#39;s a lot of reasons it could be done. It can be done initially, to help locate the pregnancy, ensure it is in the uterus, ensure that it is viable, and we can actually date the pregnancy and see how far along the patient is based on the size of the embryo, of the developing fetus. Incorrect Dating: A pregnancy that is further along than believed at the time of the test would make the AFP appear elevated. Also, twin and triplet pregnancies create more AFP, increasing the blood levels and making the test results appear abnormal.
A screened negative result means the fetus is unlikely to have an open neural tube defect (ONTD). This test is not diagnostic and should not replace second-trimester ultrasound screening for neural tube defects (NTDs). A negative maternal serum AFP screening result does not rule out chromosome abnormalities.
A screen negative result means that your likelihood of having a child with a neural tube defect is one in 1,000 or less. It also means that your likelihood of having a child with Down syndrome is less than that of a 35-year-old woman. It is never possible to be sure that your baby is going to be normal.
The following conditions may lead to elevated AFP levels in non-pregnant females or males: Hepatocellular cancer. Metastatic liver cancer. Liver cirrhosis. Hepatitis. Germ cell tumors. Yolk sac tumor. Ataxia-telangiectasia.
AFP levels in men and non-pregnant women vary by age and race but typically range from 0 to 40 ng/mL. Maternal AFP levels increase during pregnancy from about the 14th week of gestation until about 32 weeks. Between 15 and 20 weeks, AFP levels typically range between 10 and 150 ng/mL.
High levels of MSAFP could indicate a neural tube defect such as spina bifida, whereas low levels could a chromosomal abnormality such as Down syndrome. Your healthcare provider has the expertise to assess the level of risk, and will go over the test results with you.
Screen negative (low risk). This means the chance your baby could have any of the conditions the test looks for is low. Most MSAFP test results are screen negative. Screen positive (high risk). This means the chance your baby could have a birth defect is high enough to offer additional testing.
