LC-3 does not have a negation instruction, nor even a subtraction instruction (!), so instead you need to negate numbers by constructing the 2s complement directly. This entails complementing the bits with the NOT instruction, and then incrementing by 1 with ADD.
To negate a number, flip all the bits (think NOT ) and add 1. If the value of interest is a build-time constant, it is generally easier to perform the negation in your head and write that number into your source code instead doing the negation at runtime. Here, for example, 0xFF99 = -103.
The registers store data elements for processing without having to access the memory. A limited number of registers are built into the processor chip.
NOT instruction does not affect any flags! NEG instruction affects these flags only: CF, ZF, SF, OF, PF, AF.
The NEG instruction negates a value by finding 2s complement of its single operand. This simply means multiply operand by -1. When a positive value is negated the result is negative. A negative value will become positive.
MIPS Number Representation MIPS use the first bit to indicate negative number. If it is 0, it is positive. If it is 1, it is negative.
With only one exception, starting with any number in twos-complement representation, if all the bits are flipped and 1 added, the twos-complement representation of the negative of that number is obtained. Positive 12 becomes negative 12, positive 5 becomes negative 5, zero becomes zero(+overflow), etc.
Changes the arithmetic sign of the contents of a general-purpose register and places the result in another general-purpose register.
