Doug is going to talk to us about X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, otherwise known as XPS. Before we get started I would like to give you a bit of Dougs background. Doug is a senior research scientist with McCrone Associates. He specializes in surface sensitive spectroscopies, such as Auger electron, X-ray photoelectron, infrared reflection absorption, thermal desorption, and low-energy electron diffraction. Doug was awarded the U.S. Department of Commerces Silver Medal for his work in the development of conductometric chemical microsensor array technology for the detection of chemical warfare agents. The XPS binding energy of an atom is a measure of the electronic environment of the atom. Decreasing the electron density of an atom (such as a C-O bond compared with a C-C bond) increases the binding energy of the atom.
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), also known as electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), is a technique for analyzing a materials surface chemistry. XPS can measure elemental composition as well as the chemical and electronic state of the atoms within a material.
Deconvolution has also been examined as a means to remove backgrounds from XPS spectra over wide energy ranges, up to 100 eV.
The broad structure to higher binding energy (~710.5eV) of the main Fe2p3/2 peak is NOT satellite structure but is due to Fe3+ states from oxidation of the surface.
The greater the binding energy, the greater the attraction of that electron to the nucleus. i.e. peaks from electrons in 1s will have a greater energy than peaks representing electrons from 2s. Electrons in 2s will have greater energy than those in 2p.
The energy resolution of an XPS instrument is usually defined as the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the Ag 3d5/2 peak. A state-of-the-art spectrometer will be capable of an energy resolution of 0.45 eV FWHM on the Ag 3d5/2 peak.
The C-C component may be set to a binding energy of 284.8eV, by default.
Atoms of a higher positive oxidation state exhibit a higher binding energy due to the extra coulombic interaction between the photo-emitted electron and the ion core. This ability to discriminate between different oxidation states and chemical environments is one of the major strengths of the XPS technique.
Because XPS is a surface technique, there is a limited amount of organic information XPS can provide. XPS is limited to measurements of elements having atomic numbers of 3 or greater, making it unable to detect hydrogen or helium. XPS spectra also take a long time to obtain.
Auger electrons are produced by auto-ionization. The collision processes involved with XPS result in electronic excited states with energies that lie above the ionization threshold.
