Commas and periods at the end of a quote should go inside the quotation marks. This rule applies to both double and single quotation marks.
Do you have a quotation that is too long and mostly meaningless? You can use an ellipsisthree consecutive periods, with one space around each ( . . . )to leave out extra or unnecessary words. The ellipsis represents information that you are omitting from a quotation.
Omissions of material from a quoted passage, whether run-in or block, should be indicated by ellipsis points (three spaced dots) positioned on the line and separated by one space from the preceding text or from any punctuation marks that follow it.
Use of Ellipses If only part of a quote is needed, it is possible to omit information and replace it with ellipses. Ellipses (. . .) are used when information is omitted from the middle of a quote.
The Ellipsis Mark If you omit a full sentence or more in the middle of a quoted passage, or when the ellipsis coincides with the end of your sentence, use a period to end the sentence and then use the three-period ellipsis. You should have complete sentencesnot fragmentson either side of a four-dot ellipsis.
You can say quote before and unquote after a word or phrase, or quote, unquote before or after it, to show that you are quoting someone or that you do not believe that a word or phrase used by others is accurate.
If you want to omit some words, phrases, or sentences from the quote to save space, use an ellipsis (. . .) with a space before and after it to indicate that some material has been left out. If the part you removed includes a sentence break, add a period before the ellipsis to indicate this.
Matching a string that cannot contain quotes or line breaks would be easy with [^\r\n]* . Double quotes are literal characters in regular expressions, and we can easily match a sequence of characters that are not quotes or line breaks with a negated character class.
