In English, we create negative sentences by adding the word not after the auxiliary, or helping, verb. An example of an auxiliary verb is the helping verb be.
We use not or nt to form negative questions. When there is no modal verb or be, we use auxiliary verb do + nt (dont, do not, doesnt, does not, didnt): Why didnt you ask Linda?
Negative question tags Positive statementNegative tag You will pass the exam, wont you? You can speak English, cant you? You could do it for me, couldnt you? You must be patient, mustnt you?11 more rows
We make negatives by putting not after the first part of the verb: They are not working hard. They will not be working hard. They arent working hard. They wont be working hard. I dont have much time. She doesnt have any money. I havent much time. She hasnt any money. He told us not to make so much noise.
The best thing to do is give them a FULL answer, not just yes or no. You should answer, no, I dont.
Here are some common negative questions and positive versions of those same questions: Negative: Arent you going to English class tomorrow? Positive: Are you going to English class tomorrow? Negative: Doesnt she know that the report is due today?
A: Do you know what the capital of Brazil is? B: Yes, I do. Its Brasilia. Thats a positive answer. Now thats different to, A: No, I dont. What is it? Which is a negative answer. However, we can change any yes, no question into a negative question if we want to emphasize the question or to express surprise.
Usually, by adding not to an affirmative sentence, that sentence turns into a negative sentence. For sentences that contain an auxiliary verb, such as the verb to be, not follows the verb be. For example, were in the past affirmative becomes were not in the past negative, and am in present becomes am not.
