Negative questions can be very confusing in English. In this lesson weamp;#39;re going to look at different ways we use them and youamp;#39;ll also learn the best ways to answer them. Letamp;#39;s get very polite and start with the formal use. Imagine an important guest is visiting your office. You want to make a good impression and make them feel welcome. Wonamp;#39;t you come in? Wonamp;#39;t you sit down? Wonamp;#39;t you have a drink? So Jay invited his guest to do things with negative questions. Instead of saying amp;#39;willamp;#39;, he said amp;#39;wonamp;#39;tamp;#39;. Hey, Iamp;#39;m a very polite guy. Great - so thatamp;#39;s the first way we use negative questions. Theyamp;#39;re very formal and extra polite questions - questions we might ask to make offers and invitations. Good morning Mr Hale. Good morning. I just dropped by to return your umbrella. Negative questions are worded to associate an observation with the answer, like to say I feel that you are not going to work today, is that correct? Its a shorter version that assumes your answer will validate their assessment. It can be used in both directions, but always assumes the answer.
We use negative questions to confirm information that we think we know.
Words such as no, nothing, nowhere, none, nobody, no one can also be used to form negative sentences. Also using not along with the verb followed by words such as any, anything, anywhere, anyone and anybody will also do the trick. Take a look at the following examples to learn how this works.
In English, we create negative sentences by adding the word not after the auxiliary, or helping, verb. An example of an auxiliary verb is the helping verb be.
We use not or nt to form negative questions. When there is no modal verb or be, we use auxiliary verb do + nt (dont, do not, doesnt, does not, didnt): Why didnt you ask Linda?
The negative imperative sentence structure is: Do + not + verb + object[s]. Here are some examples of negative imperative sentences. Do not begin without me. Dont waste any time.
