- [Tutor] A Pap test is a test to screen for cervical cancer or other cervical diseases. Your cervix is the lower part of the uterus at the top of your vagina. A Pap test is used to check your cervix for abnormal cells. Abnormal cells can sometimes turn into cervical cancer if they arent treated. A Pap test can be part of a pelvic exam. First, your healthcare provider will place an instrument called a speculum into your vagina. The speculum will be opened so that your cervix can be seen. Next, your provider will use a scraper or brush to gently collect cells from your cervix. Your cells will be examined at a lab under a microscope to see if any of them are abnormal. It usually takes about one to three weeks to get your test results. If you have questions about this test or your test results, talk to your provider.

Its up to 30 percent of people [who] are falsely positive. Women who have a positive Pap smear generally get a colposcopy, which is an even closer examination of the cervix, vagina and vulva for signs of disease. A false positive could mean going through a biopsy during a colposcopy.
Its also possible to get a false positive Pap result. The best way to avoid a false positive test is by avoiding certain things in the days leading up to your Pap smear, including tampons, sexual intercourse, and feminine products, including creams, suppositories, and sprays.
A Pap smear is a safe way to screen for cervical cancer. However, a Pap smear isnt foolproof. Its possible to receive false-negative results meaning that the test indicates no abnormality, even though you do have abnormal cells. A false-negative result doesnt mean that a mistake was made.
A false positive result means that there is no problem. A false negative Pap test happens when a woman is told her cells are normal, but in fact, there is a change in the normal, healthy cells. This means there may be a problem and there may be a need for more tests.
Diagnostic accuracy of Pap smear cytology showed sensitivity of 97.9% (183/187), specificity of 6.7% (2/30), positive predictive value of 86.7% (183/211), negative predictive value of 33.3% (2/6), false positive rate of 93.3% (28/30), and false-negative rate of 2.1% (4/187).
Table 3. Accuracy of Pap smear in diagnosing cervical dysplasia. Sensitivity: a/a + c = 30/54 = 55.5%; specificity: d/b + d = 12/16 = 75%; positive predictive value: a/a + b = 30/34 = 88.2%; negative predictive value: d/c + d = 12/36 = 33.3%.
Today, false negatives are reported in approximately 10 to 20 percent of all negative results. In addition to false negatives, false positives can also be reported.
Not use vaginal creams, foams, gels, douches or tampons 48 hours (two days) before your Pap smear. These products could cause an abnormal result. Not have sex 48 hours (two days) before your Pap smear. Sex can irritate the skin of the cervix or cause discharge (fluids) that can lead to an abnormal result.
Endocervical glandular neoplasia (invasive endocervical adenocarcinoma [EA], adenocarcinoma in situ [AIS]) is difficult to detect on Pap tests and represents a common source of false-negative diagnoses and interobserver discordance in cervical cytology.
