but welcome to another MedCram lecture today were gonna talk about something a little different in terms of treatment we could actually talk about DNR full code palliative care just a quick primer on those sorts of things especially in terms of what we do in the intensive care unit but also what we do on the floor so I think this is kind of a confusing topic for some people who are not used to it DNR stands for do not resuscitate and of course the do and the not are pretty clear but the resuscitate can sometimes be a little confusing so when someone says somebody is DNR that means they dont want to be resuscitated but what does that exactly mean and I have they fully given consent about what it is that they want to have done well the opposite of DNR is a term that we sometimes call full code and that comes from the fact that when somebody in their heart stops or they stop breathing they have something called a code blue and its during that code blue that you can do all sorts of thi

DNR means that no CPR (chest compressions, cardiac drugs, or placement of a breathing tube) will be performed. A DNI or Do Not Intubate order means that chest compressions and cardiac drugs may be used, but no breathing tube will be placed.
The American Heart Association in 2005 moved from the traditional do not resuscitate (DNR) terminology to do not attempt resuscitation (DNAR). DNAR reduces the implication that resuscitation is likely and creates a better emotional environment to explain what the order means.
A do-not-resuscitate, or DNR, order is used to indicate when a patient chooses to forgo resuscitation, however recent analysis shows that multiple studies have connected the presence of DNR orders to elevated death rates, poorer medical care, and negative health outcomes.
If a patient does want to be resuscitated, their code status may be listed as full code (the opposite of DNR). If the patient only wants to be resuscitated under certain conditions, this is termed partial code.
DNR means, Do Not Resuscitate, or, do not attempt to restart a heart or breathing once they have stopped.
Its just one of the actions healthcare teams perform when trying to save someones life. A DNR (do not resuscitate) order means a person does not want CPR or other lifesaving measures in the event of a cardiac arrest. A DNI (do not intubate) order means a person does not want to be placed on a ventilator.
Generally, a DNR order should not be entered into the patients medical record without concurrence of the parents. However, a DNR order may be entered by the patients physician without parental permission if CPR is determined to be physiologically futile or non-therapeutic, in ance with Paragraphs E and F below.
There are currently two types of DNR orders: 1) DNR Comfort Care, and 2) DNR Comfort Care - Arrest. Upon the issuance of either order, standard forms of identification are provided for in OAC rule 3701-62-04.
